Play Date Week: Our Favorite Healthy Play Date Snacks

Every parent has some great tricks up their sleeve to get the kids to eat healthy! From “Dressed-Up Apples” to “Fun Veggie Critters,” we guarantee your kids will love munching on these healthy snacks at their next play date!

Popcorn! The good old-fashioned kind on the stove! For the big kids. I like to use a glass lid on the pot so part of the fun is watching it pop!


For the even bigger kids, I let them into my spice cabinet so they can season the popcorn to their hearts’ content! It kind of extends the activity, which is always a plus!

I love to provide something with a little sweetness so they’ll actually eat it, like cinnamon sprinkled apple chips. I also like to serve Shibolim sugar-free chocolate coated rice cakes, my kids love them. And if the kids are older, popcorn is a great choice- but make sure not to serve it if there are little ones around as it can be a choking hazard. I recently had a kid over who has severe nut allergies- always make sure to check labels carefully!

We do something called “dressed up apples,” which I got from my sister-in-law, Dina. It’s basically apple slices with a shmear of peanut butter and either some chocolate chips or a sprinkle of cinnamon. Here’s a similar idea for those that like to read from a recipe: Apple Sandwiches Recipe

When we have more squeeze yogurt pouches in the fridge than we know what to do with, I usually squeeze a bunch of “dots” onto a large cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and freeze. It makes for the perfect sweet, creamy, and refreshing treat. For a playdate, have the kids help you make ’em! It’s great for fine-motor development and is a snack and activity all in one.


Another snack we’ve been liking recently is freeze-dried fruit (we love strawberry and pear). Fresh fruit is best, but when kids are looking for a snack with a crunch these always hit the spot!

I’ll do cut-up veggie sticks (carrots, cucumbers, peppers, celery, and grape tomatoes – or whatever else I have) with a bowl of hummus in the middle. I’m always surprised how many veggies kids will eat when they’re sitting right in front of them all cut up.

We like to offer crackers with cream cheese, tuna, peanut butter, or hummus (or any spreads that the kids like). Then we give different cut up vegetables that they can use to make food art on top. Baby tomatoes can be cut to make ladybugs, celery can be caterpillars, peppers can be made into flowers.
