This year, Tisha B’Av, a day of mourning for the Jewish people, falls out on Shabbat, which means the fast day is postponed to Sunday.

Instead of the usual Seuda Hamafseket, a regular Shalosh Seudot (the third meal on Shabbat) is the last meal before Tisha B’Av. (Click here for more information about the laws when Tisha B’Av is on Sunday.) Meat and wine may be served as well as many cooked dishes, and the hardboiled eggs and ashes of the Seuda HaMafseket are not served.

Nevertheless, this meal is not meant to be lavish or joyous. One should be sure to finish eating before sunset, and company should not be invited if one doesn’t usually have guests at this time.

Many people are used to serving a simple third meal on Shabbat, and it’s hard to figure out the right foods to serve when you need it to be more substantial. We’re here to help you find ideas for what to put on your menu!  Scroll down for simple, good food rich in complex carbs, protein, and healthy fats to keep you satisfied longer before the fast.
