Ingredients

Crispy Tofu "Steaks" with Caramelized Onion Gravy

  • 3/4 c vegetable broth

  • 1/4 t black pepper

  • 1/2 t salt

  • soy sauce (1 T for gravy)

  • 1/2 c non-dairy milk

  • 1 T oil

  • 1 egg

  • 1 onion

  • 1 t vinegar

  • dried thyme (1/2 t for gravy; 1/2 t for breading)

  • 1 clove minced garlic

  • pinch of sugar

  • 1/3 c breadcrumbs

  • flour (1 1/2 T for gravy; 2 T for batter; 1/3 c for breading)

  • 1/2 t paprika

  • oil, for frying

  • sliced tofu

Directions

Prepare the Gravy

1.

Put oil, sliced onion, thyme,and sugar in a pan on medium heat. Stir occasionally. Let it simmer for approximately 30 minutes.

Stir in flour to form a paste, coating onions. Slowly stir in broth and soy sauce.

Prepare the Batter

1.

Mix ingredients.

2.

Let it sit for approximately 10 minutes to thicken.

Prepare the Breading

1.

Mix breading ingredients in separate bowl.

2.

Coat tofu in batter, breading and then fry. Pour gravy over tofu. *Serve with a side of green beans.
