My family loves this cholent! You must use brown rice here. Regular will disintegrate.
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 onion, washed and dried
4 medium potatoes (optional- substitute a sweet potato for two of the potatoes), washed and dried
1 can beans or chickpeas, drained
2/3 cup brown rice
1 packet onion soup mix or 3 tablespoons
2 tablespoons honey
brown sugar or bbq sauce
1 tablespoon pepper
2 tablespoons garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/2 teaspoon regular paprika
few shakes cumin
3 cups water
meat, your favorite piece
optional- kishka
To use a plastic crockpot liner, fill crockpot with a cup of water followed by liner.
Set crockpot to low. Dice onion. Heat oil over medium heat and saute until slightly brown about five minutes.
Peel and quarter potatoes and place in crockpot.
Place all ingredients but meat (and kishka if using) in crockpot. Mix. Place meat on top.
Cover and cook overnight.
