2 and 1/4 cups warm water
1 and 1/2 squares of yeast
3/4 cup sugar
3 cups and 6 tablespoons oil
1-2 heaping tablespoons salt
3 pounds flour (or as much needed to achieve desired texture)
jelly
confectionary sugar (optional)
Combine warm water, yeast and 1/4 cup of sugar in a medium size bowl. Let sit for 10 minutes.
Add salt, the rest of the sugar, flour, and six tablespoons of oil. Mix everything together and then knead until the consistency is soft and doughy. Let rise for about an hour and a half.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Braid dough into little challahs and let rise for another 10 minutes.
Put challahs in the oven for around 20 minutes, or until they expand.
Put three cups of oil into a deep frying pan, cover, and let heat on medium heat for about 20 minutes, being careful not to burn the oil.
Place the little challahs in the frying pan until golden brown on the bottom, flip over and do the same for the other side.
Let cool on a paper towel to absorb oil.
Fill with jelly and sprinkle confectionary sugar on top if desired.
