Nothing screams summer more than a lush green garden, gorgeous flowers and sunshine.

However, during the summer months the hot temperatures and the constant foot traffic can lead to lawns undergoing the most stress.

We are here to guide you through the balance of allowing your children to run freely while also keeping things looking nice!

1. Water your lawn deeply and less often

Proper watering is the key to success, especially in the summer. Unless you are mindful of your watering habits, you will probably find your lawn suffering in the heat and losing that healthy look you’re aiming for.

It’s recommended to water your lawn deeply two to three times per week, rather than daily. When you water your lawn daily, your grass develops a shallow root system – which tend to dry out fast in the sun. Rather, water deeply, less often – which in turn will help form a deeper rooting system, making your lawn stronger and more drought-resistant.

2. Water early in the morning

The general rule for watering is to get it done first thing in the morning. Not only will you feel super accomplished when you tick something off your to-do list before 10am, but it will also help reduce water evaporation. The best time is between 6am and 10am, when the sun is out but not as strong. This ensures that your grass can still go through the process of photosynthesis, but it is still early enough that the sun won’t evaporate the water too quickly.

3. Use natural lawn fertilizer

When it comes to summer heat, your lawn requires extra nourishment to maintain healthy levels of growth. We recommend using natural fertilizer to ensure that your lawn is getting the ultimate nutrition while also safeguarding it from the heat. Organic fertilizer is generally made from animal or plant waste, which have been proven to improve the structure of soil and increase water retention. Over time, your soil will become stronger and able to withstand more because of the organic nutrients. Not to mention that organic fertilizers are biodegradable, sustainable, and more environmentally friendly.

4. Proper mowing

Just like with watering, it’s important to remember that mowing your lawn very often is not recommended. While there are no concrete rules to mowing, the timing should be based on the growth of your grass. While your grass may grow faster in the winter, in the summer you might have to adapt to a different, less frequent schedule.

It’s also important not to remove more than one-third of the grass blades in a single mowing because this could reduce the carbohydrates that are allowing your grass to grow at a healthy pace.

Additionally, if you mow too often you risk your lawn becoming weak and not being able to handle any weather changes. Don’t forget that you should always mow on dry grass; when your grass is wet, it won’t cut evenly.

5. Summer flowers

Although we’re encouraged to do most of our flower planting in the spring, there are thankfully some sun-loving options that can elevate your lawn. Find an area in your garden that gets at least five hours of direct sunlight a day, and then pick flowers that thrive in the sunshine. We recommend geraniums, lantanas, zinnias, or petunias. These are all heat-tolerant and can thrive in warm temperature. Not to mention that these options tend to attract beautiful butterflies.

So here you have it, no rocket science, or major secrets; with just consistency and small minor changes to your gardening schedule and things will stay looking fabulous in your garden!

Happy gardening!
