1. Before you shop, shop your home first!

The new school year is here, and before buying everything new, take a little time to reset, declutter, and make use of what you already have.

Look through supplies from previous school years and check for duplicates or extras you may have accumulated throughout the year.

- Pencils, pens & highlighters
- Notebooks
- Art supplies
- Backpacks & extras

Using what you already have will save you money and prevent unnecessary clutter from buying duplicates while you still have perfectly good supplies at home.

You might be surprised by how much you already have!

2. Reset the Closet

Whether you've already bought your new-season clothing or haven't started shopping yet, now is the perfect time to pull out what you have stored away or left in the closet from the previous season.

Before putting everything back, take a moment to really look at each item and ask yourself:

How do I feel when I see this? Does it bring me joy? Is it still in good condition? Does it still fit?

And if the answer is no, ask yourself:

Am I ready to let this go and make space for clothes that make me feel good, look beautiful, and that I’ll actually enjoy wearing?

Once you have your answer, decide where each item belongs:

- Donation bag — if someone else can still enjoy it.
- Pass it on — to a younger sibling or family member who can use it.
- Toss it — if it’s too worn, damaged, or stained to be passed on.

You know this best! Trust yourself and let go of what no longer serves you.

If your child wears a uniform to school, most of their very thin summer clothes can usually be stored away.

Moving previous-season clothing out of the closet gives you a chance to see exactly what you have for the upcoming season while keeping your closet clean and organized.

Quick Tips

A Tip for Seasonal Storage

If you’re unsure whether you’ll use something again but still want to hold on to it — or you know for sure you want to keep it — I like to use the top shelf of the closet for past and upcoming-season clothing.

This keeps those pieces handy and easy to access without taking up valuable space in your current wardrobe.

My go-to? Pretty, practical bins that keep everything contained and organized. ✨

If you don’t have the space for all your clothes, vacuum packing is another great option. Of course, storing them in a storage closet is also ideal — just don’t forget about them!

What About In-Between Season Clothes?

Since the weather is still unpredictable, I would keep some in-between-season pieces in your current wardrobe. The weather can still be tricky until mid-October, so it’s nice to have those pieces handy when you need them.

3. Shabbos and Yom Tov

And then there's Shabbos & Yom Tov!

As we all know… when it comes to Yom Tov, it's never enough!

Keeping some of those summer pieces accessible can be especially helpful, so don't rush to pack everything away just because the season is changing.

4. Don't Forget the Little Things

This is also the perfect time to quickly go through:

- Tights

- Undergarments

- Hair accessories

Get rid of anything that has seen better days, no longer fits, or simply isn't being used.

While you're there, give the space a little mini reorganization.
You don't have to completely redo everything — sometimes a small reset is all it takes to give the space that fresh new-season feeling!

Before You Shop, Reset

Shop your home.
Use what you have.
Let go of what you don't need.
Then shop for what's actually missing.

A little organizing now can save you money, space, and unnecessary clutter later.
