When Life Gives You Lemons

There’s nothing like a splash of lemon to bring your food to life. And if you think I’m being poetic, then you haven’t tried it. And if you haven’t tried it, can you even call yourself a proper cook? Okay, enough with the judging. How do you get that perfect splash of lemon? That’s what I tested for you — lemon squeezers. Most look the same, down to the shade of yellow, and yet, they all performed differently. Check it out for yourself.

Testing, Testing

1. I tested each squeezer by juicing a lemon with it (both halves). I checked for exertion, how much was extracted, and if there was any pulp in the juice.

2. I washed each squeezer.

3. I put it away, checking its footprint.

Zulay Lemon Squeezer

Price: $14.99

Notes: Smooth mechanism, most popular on the internet, seems to be the model everyone copies.

Stars: 4.7

Y-Me Lemon Squeezer

Price: $6.99

Notes: Looks exactly like the Imusa, needs less exertion though. Had some pulp when I squeezed very hard.

Stars: 4.5

Chef ‘N Freshforce Citrus Juicer

Price: $19.67

Notes: Expensive, heavy, takes up more space, doesn’t do the job as well as the Zulay.

Stars: 4.2

Imusa Lemon Squeezer

Price: $6.97

Notes: Looks exactly like the Y-Me, needs more exertion to use. A drop of pulp came out.

Stars: 4

Drizom Lemon Juicer

Price: $13.99

Notes: Classic reamer, beyond pulpy.

Stars: 3.7

Elite Gourmet Electric Citrus Juicer

Price: $13.99

Notes: So easy to use, alas, it was pulpy, and I had to fish out pits.

Stars: 3.2

Overall Winner

Zulay. Does what it’s supposed to do. Honestly, using my hands and tongs to squeeze out the extra juice is still way more efficient. The only downside of doing it that way is the pits. Literal pits. But that’s me, I’m not one for uni-task gadgets.

Tip: Don’t let “real lemon juice” fool you. There’s nothing like freshly squeezed lemon juice, especially in salads and other foods where you don’t process the juice further. Fresh, vibrant, and citrusy, it’s real, not just pretty words.
