Family Table Testing 123: Veggie Choppers

Categories: Organization and Cleaning

Chopped

Okay, I’m gonna be a cranky old lady here. Those vegetable choppers thingies always looked cool — until I started testing them out. First, I got a nasty cut from one (don’t let anyone say I don’t sacrifice for you). Second, you have to cut whatever you want chopped into smaller pieces before the chopping commences, which makes the whole gadget a waste of time — I already have my knife and cutting board out. Third, they’re a pain to clean. If I’m taking out toothpicks to clean — that’s a dud in my book. Also, I love dicing vegetables; I find it meditative. With that said, I still tried out the best and brightest choppers out there, and if chopping veggies makes you cry or you just want the perfect dice without the effort, these will do the trick. And with that, let’s do this!

Testing, Testing

1. I put together, took apart, and swapped out blades, checking for ease and safety.

2. I chopped a cucumber, tomato, pepper, onion, and garlic in each one.

3. I double chopped the cucumbers to a) get a finer dice, and b) see what happened — many of them crushed the cucumbers the second time around.

4. I cleaned them all.

5. I put them in my cabinet, checking their footprint.

Ourokhome

Price: $17.84

Notes: It’s like a manual food processor, just pull the string to spin the blade. It works well and fast but chops unevenly. Can chop garlic. Easy to clean.

Stars: 4.7

Fullstar

Price: $29.97

Notes: Cleanest cuts. Needs a bit more exertion than other choppers this style. Blades are easy to remove; feels safe. Hard to wash the blades.

Stars: 4.5

OXO

Price: $22.95

Notes: Easy to use. Chops unevenly. Can chop garlic. Doesn’t chop pepper or tomato well. Hard to take apart and put back together.

Stars: 4

Mueller

Price: $24.79

Notes: Not bad but not outstanding in anything. Hard to wash.

Stars: 3.7

Raiqee

Price: $19.97

Notes: This one cut me because the blades were hard to get out. Also didn’t make the nicest cuts. Just mean to me all around. Also hard to wash.

Stars: 3.2

LHS

Price: $17.99

Notes: Meh. Just meh. And hard to wash.

Stars: 2.9

The Bottom Line

Ourokhome. It’s compact, easy to use, easy to clean, and easy to take apart and reassemble. The only reason you wouldn’t want this is because it doesn’t dice evenly. If pretty is your thing, then get the FullStar.

Tip: When it says “don’t touch, sharp blade,” believe them even if it looks fine.

Thank you for this feature! Hope your cuts are healed:) I actually bought one and didn’t realize that there are differences between them, and I threw it out after realising that it doesn’t cut my tomatoes(which is the vegetable I need the most help with 😉 to look pretty in my salads)

To get the best results for uniform tomato cubes, is by slicing the tomatoes first and only then putting it through the choppers blades. In order to keep the slicer clog free, chop a different veg after every tomato slice to push all remnants of the previous tomato slice. Tomatoe ends should face upwards for super results.
