Prepare the Dates
Pit the dates and cut into quarters. Slightly flatten them out to create a flat surface.
Preheat oil in a skillet and sear the dates for two minutes per side, being careful that they don’t burn.
There’s a non-kosher restaurant in New York that’s famous for this salad. I’ve never tasted it, of course, but that didn’t stop me from going down a curiosity rabbit hole trying to replicate it for myself. The result is sweet and savory, with a little kick that helps everything feel tied together.

Zest the oranges and reserve for the dressing. Cut one and a half into segments, reserving the remaining half.
Juice the orange half and add the zest.
Add remaining ingredients and whisk well until smooth.
Pour 3/4 of the dressing over the cabbage and toss well. Transfer the cabbage to a serving dish.
Top with dates, radishes, orange segments, and scallions. Drizzle with remaining dressing.
Sprinkle sesame seeds over the entire bowl and serve.
Cooked or roasted beets make a perfect addition to this salad!
