Shimi is bringing it back to her roots with an authentic Yemenite soup. She shares with us her mother’s authentic Yemenite soup recipe. Filled with tons of flavor and culture, this soup is a must-try.

Ingredients

Yemenite Soup

  • 1 and 1/2 pounds beef stew meat

  • 1 package chicken necks

  • 6-8 chicken drumsticks

  • 2 tablespoons avocado oil

  • 3 onions

  • 6-8 carrots

  • 1/2 bunch cilantro

  • 6 cloves fresh garlic

  • 1/4 cup chicken soup mix (without MSG)

  • hawaij

  • marrow bones

  • 6-8 Yukon or Russet potatoes

  • 1 tomato, chopped

  • 1 tablespoon onion granulated

  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder

  • 1 tablespoon turmeric

  • 1 tablespoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon pepper

Directions

Prepare the Yemenite Soup

1.

Heat oil. Add the meat. Season with salt and pepper.

2.

Transfer to a bowl.

3.

Sauté onion and carrots. Add whole garlic, and saute for 10 minutes.

4.

Add the rest of spices and soup mix. Add tomato.

5.

Add in all the chicken and browned meat.

6.

Add water, potatoes, and cilantro.

7.

Bring to a boil and then simmer for three hours.

This looks like an amazing dish!! Could I leave out the beef & only use chicken?

Does this freeze well?

I wouldn’t freeze it because of the potatoes.

This was amaaaazing! I would leave out the potatoes next time and perhaps add zucchini and/or sweet potatoes. The whole family loved this!
