Born in Bilke, Czechoslovakia (now Ukraine), Irene was a teenager when the Nazis invaded. She and her family were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where she was separated from her father and brothers. After liberation, she immigrated to the United States, where she became active in Holocaust education. She passed away in 2021.
Olga, Irene's younger sister, was also deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau during the Holocaust. After surviving the camp, she settled in the United States, where she raised a family. Alongside her sister, she contributed to Honey Cake & Latkes: Recipes from the Old World by the Auschwitz-Birkenau Survivors. She passed away in 2017.
