California Dreamin’

By: Dini Klein @prepandrally

This Mishloach Manot is definitely a reflection of the California life. Bright, organic, earthy, and clean. Citrus and olive trees are abundant here, so I loaded up a terracotta pot with Gefen Olive Oil and Gefen Lemon Jell dessert. I filled the rest of the space with fresh oranges from our tree, a cute cactus, and a fun herb planting kit. Simple and beautiful, just like the Golden State.

Cholent Kit Mishloach Manot

By: Shifra & Shlomo Klein aka Fleishig Magazine @shifraklein

Every issue of Fleishigs Magazine celebrates a different cut of meat. In the Kiddush/February Issue we highlighted salami and showcased a hasselback salami cholent. It was absolute perfection and inspired us to share a version of this recipe for our Purim mishloach manot. Each mishloach manot will also include a copy of Fleishigs Magazine kiddush issue as the recipe to make the cholent is inside. (We also included the recipe here so you can simply print it out on a card and include it in the mishloach manot.)

Using Gefen caramelized onions was a convenient way to add tons of flavor to the cholent and package the mishloach manot in the most convenient way possible. You can choose to make this mishloach manot as grand or minimal as you’d like and include the sausages or merely include the recipe. The crucial components here are the onions and cholent mix.

Make your own cholent kit: Fleishigs Style

1 bag Gefen Cholent Bean Mix

1 bag Gefen Barley

1 package Gefen Caramelized Onions

Spice blend (mix: 2 tablespoons paprika, 2 tablespoons garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, 1-2 tablespoons onion soup mix)

1 package Kielbasa sausages or salami

1 package kishka (optional)

1 copy of Fleishigs Magazine kiddush issue (optional)

Hasselback Salami Cholent

Serves: 8

To hasselback a salami, place it between two chopsticks. Use a sharp knife to slice 1/8-inch thick slices, without going all the way through to the bottom.

1/2 cup vegetable oil

1 package Gefen Caramelized Onions

2 tablespoons kosher salt

2 tablespoons paprika

2 tablespoons garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1 to 2 tablespoons onion soup mix

1/2 cup ketchup (optional)

2 large Russet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks

1 cup cholent bean mix

1/2 cup barley

5 to 7 cups water, divided

1 (16-ounce) salami or two large kielbasa sausages, cut hasselback-style (see head note)

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Heat oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add onions and sauté until caramelized, about 15 minutes. Add spices and ketchup and sauté  for another five minutes.

2. Add potatoes and cook for about 15 minutes. Stir in cholent bean mix, barley and wheat berries. Add enough water to cover everything (about 5 cups) and stir. Bring to a boil, then cover and transfer to the oven. Cook for two to three hours, until potatoes are soft and beans are cooked all the way through.

3. Lower oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. If the cholent looks dry, add up to two more cups of water. Gently nestle hasselback salami into the cholent so at least half is submerged. Cover and transfer back to the oven for 15 to 24 hours. Serve hot.

Purim for the Little Ones

By: Raizy Fried @raizyscookin

Here’s an adorable and heartwarming Mishloach Manot that’s perfect for anyone with a little one. A package that is just as much for the mom as for the baby…

Whether you choose to display it like I did, or you present it in a convenient colorful bag, this Mishloach Manot won’t feel typical. Here is a heartwarming gesture of fondness. A package filled with character, love, and real food that babies and toddlers will very much enjoy.

What’s amazing is that most of these products are Kosher for Passover, so you can keep these treats around, or enjoy them right away.

I included:

The adorable mini size Gefen 24 oz. Applesauce

The practical Gefen Squeeze Me applesauce pouches that come in several flavors

The classic Gerber baby puffs

The all-new Gefen Almond Butter puffs

Some little baby toys in matching hues (HABA Snug Up 10″ Soft Boy Doll or Girl Doll, Melissa & Doug Rainbow Stacker, The First Years First Keys Infant and Baby Toy). You can get quality toys like the ones I used, or pick up discounted options at your local dollar store. Wrap the larger toys in colorful wrapping paper!

Please note: To fulfill the halachic (Jewish law) obligation of mishloach manot, packages must consist of two different types of ready to eat food. Be sure to send at least one package of this type on Purim day in order to fulfill the mitzvah. For more information, please read All About Mishloach Manot.
