A quick, easy recipe for delicious challah.

Ingredients

Main ingredients

  • 1 and 1/4 cups water or plain Gefen Soy Milk

  • 3 extra large eggs

  • 1/3 cup oil

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1 and 1/2 tablespoons salt

  • 5 and 1/2 cups (approx) flour – can use up to 2 cups Shibolim Whole Wheat Flour

  • 2 and 1/2 teaspoons bread machine yeast

Directions

Make the Challah

1.

Place all ingredients into bread machine in order. Set for dough cyle. (My machine’s dough cycle is two hours, but I let the dough rise another hour – until pushing the top of the machine up).

2.

Turn out dough onto floured and/or sprayed counter. Knead gently for one minute. Shape and braid challahs. Place on parchment paper lined baking sheets. (I like to double pan to prevent burning of the bottoms).

3.

Let rise, covered, for one hour.

4.

Bake in a preheated 350 degrees Fahrenheit oven for about 20 minutes, depending on size of challahs.

Notes:

Freezes well, well-wrapped.

Yields 2 large challahs

I have owned three different bread machines and every one of them said not to use more than 4 cups flour. All the recipes for Challah I see so far on your site call for more than that. You must realize that most break machines, or the ones I can afford, have that limit. I have never seen more than that although I suppose there are bigger bread machines, but I am getting major brand machines and I can’t imagine that I just happened to buy ones that are smaller than the norm. Could you please give a recipe, a good recipe, that uses 4 cups flours or less. I would really really appreciate it. I was an Artisan Baker, but I am long retired now and my hands have Rheumatoid arthritis and I can no longer mix and knead my dough. I hated the machines until I needed them, LoL. I am so thankful now for them I cannot tell you. Also, I am mildly gluten intolerant. I would love a gluten free Challah.
thank you so much for your consideration,
Adinah

Hi Adinah! I love using my bread machine as well. I’ve always used a recipe with 5 cups of flour. I’ve been using the same one for around 5 years with no issues. The above recipe has a little more flour but this is the recipe that I use weekly in my bread machine and have never had an issue https://www.kosher.com/recipe/the-best-bread-machine-challah-14689
