Admittedly, I had never made homemade herring until my son in-law told me how much he loved the fresh herring his mom makes each week. My next call was to my mechutanim (my son-in-law’s parents). “Homemade herring, really? It’s that much better?” I asked. YES! They were right; fresh herring is actually delicious and super easy to make. It is not fishy tasting and very inexpensive. I use white herring fillets. I’ve started making all sorts of homemade versions, like sautéed onion and everything bagel spice, sweet pickled herring, and mustard creamed herring. Start with this simple version, try the others, and add seasonings to your taste. Thank you to my special mechutan for teaching me this classic recipe and giving me the courage to eat it too!
3 herring fillets (rinsed and dried), sliced into 1/4-inch pieces
1 red onion, sliced thinly
1 jalapeno, seeds and membrane removed, chopped (see note), optional
juice of 1 lemon (or about 3 tablespoons Gefen Lemon Juice)
3 tablespoons Gefen Extra-Virgin Olive Oil
1/2 teaspoon Haddar Kosher Salt
Place herring pieces in a serving dish. Toss with onion slices and jalapeno.
Squeeze lemon juice over herring, then drizzle with olive oil and salt. Mix well.
Let sit for 10 minutes for flavors to blend. Serve immediately.
