Ingredients

Flaming Chocolate Sphere

You Will Also Need

  • 3 to 4 fillable ornaments, 4 or 5 inches in diameter

  • 1 (3-inch) round metal cookie cutter

Directions

1.

Prepare the chocolate sphere: Melt the chocolate in the microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring until smooth.

2.

Open the ornament and coat the inside with a lightly oiled paper towel. Pour the melted chocolate into one of the halves. Close the ornament, slowly rotating it for about 30 seconds until the chocolate evenly coats the entire interior. You may have to shake it a bit to fill in any gaps.

3.

Place the ornament in the freezer for two minutes, and then flip it over. Repeat two to three times, until the chocolate is set. Freeze for 30 more minutes.

4.

Remove the ornament from the freezer. Carefully open it and remove the chocolate sphere, working quickly to avoid touching the chocolate for too long (the warmth of your hands can cause it to start melting). To be extra careful, place the sphere back in the freezer for five minutes immediately after removing it from the ornament.

5.

While the sphere is in the freezer, heat a three-inch round metal cookie cutter in the oven for three to five minutes. Using an oven mitt, place the heated cookie cutter on a flat surface, and then place the frozen chocolate sphere over it. Gently twist back and forth until it cuts through the chocolate. Make sure not to apply too much pressure to the sphere, as it is very fragile. Return the sphere to the freezer.

6.

Serve: Place your dessert of choice (brownie, mousse, etc.) in the center of a large plate and carefully cover it with the chocolate sphere. Scatter berries and mint leaves around the sphere as garnishes (and also to cover any holes or imperfections where the sphere touches the plate).

7.

Microwave the vodka or rum for one minute, then pour into a metal gravy boat. Light with a kitchen torch or long lighter and pour over the sphere so it melts down over the dessert hiding inside.

Tips:

Fillable ornaments are available online or at craft and baking stores.
