This dish is hearty, delicious and satisfying. The best part is cooking the flanken in the crockpot! The flanken falls apart as it becomes so tender and mouth-watering.
1 and 1/2 pounds boneless flanken
2 cups cabernet sauvignon (I used Zmora Cabernet)
2 tablespoons onion soup mix
1/2 teaspoon coffee
1/2 cup Gefen BBQ Sauce
1 teaspoon garlic salt
2 bags frozen gnocchi (Pasta Authority)
1 bunch asparagus (see note)
Place the flanken in a crockpot. Add the coffee, garlic salt, BBQ sauce, onion soup mix, and the wine. Turn the crockpot to low and let the meat cook for six hours. Add one teaspoon cornstarch mixed with a cup of water to the liquid in the crockpot to thicken it before serving. You can also pull the flanken apart to bite-sized pieces.
Boil the gnocchi for a few minutes according to package directions. Drain well. Add the gnocchi to the crockpot and stir.
Wash and check the asparagus well. Trim into bite-sized pieces and sautee in olive oil on high heat for a few minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste. The asparagus should still have a crunch and bite to it.
Toss the asparagus into the crockpot and mix all the ingredients together. Turn the crockpot off and serve immediately. Enjoy!

Baking or cooking vs crock-pot? I don’t own a crock-pot. Can I bake or cook it for the same results?
I would try to make the flanken on a low heat in the oven. Maybe overnight.
Cook in an oven that’s on 200 overnight.
Cabernet Sauvignon? Different kinds of meat? Hello! I was wondering if I can’t use other kinds of wine to put into the dish? Can I use a cooking wine or will it totally not give the same effect?
Also is this dish good as left overs or only good to eat right away?
Lastly, flanken can be quite pricey, can I use a different kind of meat like middle chuck which also requires a long cooking time?
Thanks!
Cooking wine is never the same as the real deal. I would guess the gnocchi might get mushy. I would definitely try to ask your butcher for a comparable and less expensive cut.
when to put When do I put the gnocchi into the crockpot? Does it cook with the Flanken? Or do I add it at the end when serving?
At the end. Otherwise it will get melty and mushy.
