Corona has the world going mad but in this crazy time it seems it is making people delve into the world of baking and as a result yeast is sold out everywhere. Challah is also seemingly hard to find! My mom wanted to make challah but alas she couldn’t get hold of yeast. We googled some easy yeast substitutes and we decided to go with baking powder. I present to you the solution – NO YEAST CHALLAH! Not only does it not require yeast it also doesn’t require a rise time! In fact you need to bake it immediately. This recipe yields one nice sized challah.

Ingredients

Main ingredients

  • 4 cups all purpose flour

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

  • 2 tablespoons sugar (if you like your challah sweet then feel free to add a little more)

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 egg

  • 1/3 cup oil

  • 1 and 1/4 cups warm water

Directions

Prepare the Challah

1.

In a mixer bowl add all the dry ingredients.

2.

Slowly mix to combine all the ingredients.

3.

Add the egg and oil. Slowly add the warm water a little at a time while the mixer is still on low.

4.

Gradually increase the speed until the dough forms and it comes away from the sides. As soon as everything is fully incorporated stop the mixer.

5.

Take the dough out and immediately braid the challah.

6.

Place on a sheet tray, egg wash and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30-35 minutes until it is golden brown.

I was so glad to find a recipe that I did not need yeast for because I didn’t have any in the house! I found this recipe very easy to do and I actually finished the dough with my hands as if I were kneeding it and it turned out fine but it never really got brown even though I used an egg wash. It did get a little tan. the texture was fine so what is basically a quick bread. It certainly saves my Shabbat dinner so I am happy about it and I will keep it in my recipe book!

Made this tonight and didn’t have high expectations, but it turned out really great! My family devoured it.

What a nightmare! Has anyone tested this recipe? I followed it exactly and had a gloppy sticky mess that couldn’t be worked with at all, much less braided. I tried to correct it by adding a little flour to make it easier to handle. It just didn’t work and the dough mess went up to where my mixer blades connect and it took an hour to clean it out of there, out of the bowl. I had to throw it all out.

Ugh!
