Caramelize the onions in a skillet on the grill for the best tasting onions to add to any sandwich, burger or salad. You can also use this steak marinade on any cheaper cut to boost the flavor.
1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons Gefen Light Olive Oil, divided
2 onions, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon beef consommé
1 tablespoon Tonnelli Worcestershire Sauce
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup whiskey or bourbon
2 cloves garlic, minced or 2 cubes Gefen Frozen Garlic
2 tablespoons fresh rosemary, finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
salt, to taste
black pepper, to taste
1 pound sandwich steak
1 French baguette
your favorite sauce, for serving
Preheat grill to 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
Caramelize the onions: In a cast-iron pan, heat two tablespoons oil. Add onions and cook for six minutes, stirring every two minutes.
Prepare the marinade: In a bowl, combine 1/4 cup oil, sugar, consommé, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, whiskey, garlic, rosemary, onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Add steak and marinate for two minutes per side.
Grill steak two minutes per side. Allow the steak to rest five minutes so the juices redistribute. Slice very thinly against the grain.
Lay the steak strips in the skillet in a single layer. Cook three minutes per side.
To serve, slice the baguette in half lengthwise. Fill with steak and onions and add your favorite sauces. Cut into two sandwiches.
