This is a super-easy recipe and delicious recipe for whole wheat rolls that I got from my friend, who got it from her sister, etc. It can be pulled together in a matter of minutes, and best of all, it can be hand-kneaded. I have doubled the recipe with great results as well. This recipe is egg-free for those with allergy concerns.

Ingredients

Whole Wheat Rolls

  • 2 tablespoons yeast

  • 1 tablespoon sugar

  • 2 and 1/2 cups warm water

  • 1/2 cup oil

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1 tablespoon salt

  • 6 and 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

  • egg, beaten, for egg wash (can be omitted or substituted)

Optional Topping Suggestions

  • everything spice

  • minced onion

  • kosher salt

Directions

Prepare the Whole Wheat Rolls

1.

Combine the yeast, one tablespoon sugar, and warm water. Let yeast mixture start to bubble.

2.

Then add oil, remaining half cup sugar, salt, and flour. Knead the dough well.

3.

Place the dough in a bowl, cover it with a towel, and allow it to rise for at least 40 minutes.

4.

Form the dough into rolls, egg and top them as you like.

5.

Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit until golden, about 25 minutes. Do not overbake.

Notes:

Rolls do freeze well. Freeze immediately for best results. If you are making 24 rolls, each roll will be about 160 calories and provide three grams of fiber.
