Diets Most Indians prepare rice this way. In Canada, my mother would sometimes add frozen vegetables for color.
1/4 cup oil
1 onion, chopped
1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 and 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
1 and 1/2 cups basmati rice
3 cups water
Heat oil in a saucepan. Add onions and sauté onion until golden. Add cumin seeds. Add salt and turmeric and mix well. Add rice and stir and cook for a couple of minutes. Add water.
Let rice cook, uncovered, in pot until water has evaporated. Cover, lower heat, and cook for five more minutes. Using a fork, poke rice to let steam out (This way the rice will not be sticky).
