Meat sauce recipe
1 tbsp canola oil
1 large onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, grated
2.2 lbs. ground beef
1 tbsp salt
2 tsp black pepper
2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
2 tsp paprika
2 tsp mustard powder
1 tsp nutmeg
1&1/2 c red wine (not expensive but something you would drink)
3 cans tomato sauce (not marinara)
2 cans of water (using the empty sauce cans) or chicken stock
2 bay leaves
In a large pot over medium heat add oil and onion.
Cook until golden (about 8 minutes).
Add garlic. Cook for 1 minute.
Add ground beef, salt, pepper and all the spices.
Use a flat wooden spoon to break up the meat.
Continue stirring until meat is cooked through and most of the liquid from it has evaporated.
Turn up heat and add red wine.
Cook for 2-3 minutes until wine has reduced.
Add the rest of the ingredients.
Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover and simmer as long as possible.
Taste to adjust salt and pepper.
Remove bay leaves before serving.
Serve hot over al dente pasta or rice.
