There many stores that sell ice creams and yogurts that are brands that are OU certified. And the question that people ask is, can they go into those stores and purchase ice cream or yogurt?
The OU certification typically is only on the closed cartons. These stores are obviously opening up the carton of ice cream and serving ice cream out of those cartons.
One issue, of course, in those stores, Is that even if the ice cream is kosher, they use toppings and ice cream cones that may not necessarily be certified.
But if one specifically wants to purchase ice cream from such a shop, what they should do is make sure that the carton that the ice cream is being served from has an OU on it.
Preferably, it should be a carton that was not used or served from previously, because the scoop might have been used for something which is not certified, and before the person who serves you the ice cream from that carton, is going to serve you, make sure that the scoop is clean, that there's no residue from a product that you don't know its status.
What would be best, of course, is to only patronize an ice cream or yogurt store that has supervision, not just on the ice cream and yogurt that's sold, but the entire shop.
