If you are anything like our family, the duffel unpacking and repacking between first half and second half happens in the garage. Plus, that’s where we keep our beach toys. And our bikes. And the extra paper towel rolls. And also, the other freezer.

The garage is a happening place, the Grand Central Station of many households. It’s hard to keep it neat and organized, but it is also the most necessary. The proper storage techniques really make all the difference. We spoke to Ahuva Shmerhold of Interiors by Ahuva to discuss the best possible way to keep your garage organized and user friendly.

Kosherdotcom: Okay, so  what should we be keeping in our garages?

Ahuva Shmerhold: You should keep anything you actually use and get rid of anything that’s just clutter and you don’t actually use!

Everything should be in its own zone.

Tools and equipment zone: This is where you’ll store your tools, lawnmower, snowblower, and other large equipment.

Sports equipment zone: This is where you’ll store your bikes, skis, snowboards, and other sports equipment.

Seasonal items zone: This is where you’ll store items that you only use seasonally, such as pool toys.

Storage zone: This is where you’ll store any other items that don’t fit into the other zones.

KDC: Do you have any specific products that you recommend for efficient storing?

AS: Yes, I do!

Shelving is a great way to store bulky items, such as tools and sports equipment.

Storage bins are a great way to store smaller items, such as tools, cleaning supplies, and seasonal items. Make sure the bins you buy are made to withstand the elements.

Wall-mounted organizers are a great way to store items that you use frequently, such as flashlights and tools. Here and here are two different types of wall-mounted organizers.

Ceiling-mounted storage is a great way to store items that you don’t use often, such as seasonal items or camping gear.

KDC: Okay, once we have that covered, how do we keep things neat and organized?

AS: Label everything. This will help you keep track of what’s where and make it easier to find what you need.

KDC: Any other tips you can share with us?

AS: Use vertical space. Garages tend to be short on floor space, so it’s important to use vertical space as much as possible. You can do this by installing shelves on the walls, hanging baskets from the ceiling, or using stackable storage bins.

Get creative with your storage solutions. There are a variety of creative storage solutions available for garages. You can use old milk crates, wire baskets, or even old furniture to store your belongings.

Make it easy to find what you need. When you’re organizing your garage, it’s important to make it easy to find what you need. This means labeling everything and using a system that works for you.

Keep it simple. Don’t try to do too much at once. Start by decluttering and then focus on organizing one zone at a time.
