My sister-in-law’s mother, Mrs. Y. Liss, gave me this recipe at her granddaughter’s bas mitzvah party. It may require extra work, but the results are worth it!
She sent me the recipe with the following blurb attached: My home-economics teacher, Mrs. Ruth Levi from Detroit, gave me this recipe. It was published in the local Detroit Women’s Orthodox League cookbook called From a Kosher Pantry With Our Love in 1976.
Yield: 1 9-inch pie. The dough yields enough for a 9-inch double crust
2 cups Glicks Flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup shortening (see note)
5 tablespoons orange juice (ice cold)
5 tart apples, peeled and thinly sliced
3/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon Tuscanini Lemon Juice
2 tablespoons Glicks Flour
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon Gefen Cinnamon
1 tablespoon margarine
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon Gefen Cinnamon
Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. For the crust, mix flour and salt and cut in shortening (cut into tiny pieces using two knives until it resembles coarse crumbs). Add orange juice. Gently combine by hand until it forms a ball. Divide in half and roll out one piece on a lightly floured board, into a circle about half an inch bigger than your pie pan. Fold over, lift, and ease into pan. Trim off hanging edge.
Combine all filling ingredients except margarine. Place in pie crust. Dot top with small pieces of margarine.
Roll out second half of dough. Fold over and place in pan on top of filling. Turn edge of upper crust over the edge of the pie crust and under the lower crust to seal edges. Flute edges by pressing down firmly with a fork or your fingers to seal the crusts together.
Cut slits into top crust to allow steam to escape during baking. Sprinkle sugar and cinnamon on top. Place pie on cookie sheet to catch spills and bake in preheated oven for 45 minutes.

Is Crisco shortening? Is there a healthier option besides that?
Coconut oil and avocado oil can be used as a substitute for Crisco. However vegetable oil will be your best bet because it’s inexpensive and flavorless.
Can you post a link/picture for kosher shortening? Thank you.
