Fried fish is definitely one of the Nine Days meals my family enjoys, because it’s almost like eating schnitzel. The tartar sauce adds brightness and delicious flavor.
1 and 1/3 cups self-rising flour (or you can sift together 1 and 1/3 cups all-purpose flour, such as Glicks, 3/4 teaspoon salt and 2 teaspoons baking powder)
1 cup water
1 egg
2 teaspoons sugar
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon Pereg White Pepper
2 pounds cod fillets
3 cups oil, for frying
1 cup Gefen Mayonnaise
1/2 small onion, diced very small (about 2 tablespoons)
2 tablespoons pickle relish (sweet or dill–whichever you prefer)
1/2 teaspoon Tuscanini Lemon Juice
1/2 teaspoon Pereg Garlic Powder
Place flour, water, egg, sugar, salt, and pepper in a blender and blend. Let rest 20 to 30 minutes.
Heat oil on high in a pot that is deep but not very wide. Cut fish into wedges. Dip into batter and drop carefully into very hot oil. Fry on each side until golden brown.
Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl. Allow to sit for an hour or two before serving so that flavors blend together. Serve alongside fish.
