Australian millionaire Tim Gurner made an impression worldwide when he chided millennials for binging on fancy matcha lattes and avocado toast instead of saving up to buy a home.

If you ask me, the best thing that came out of his viral article was the millennial mortgage calculator, which calculates just how many avocado toast you’d have to restrain yourself from buying to afford a home. Brilliant.

I’m not usually one to start quoting studies, but reading up it’s pretty crazy that 70% of millennials take pictures of their food before eating it. That doesn’t even compare to the 82% that post it on instagram with at least ten food #hashtags.

It’s so Instagrammable that #avocadotoast has over 1 million posts, beating buddha bowls, smoothies, and even the acai bowl trend. We’re basically part of a avocado-snapping cult.

Looking to boost your grid? Add a ripe avocado to your breakfast spread and let those ’likes’ pour in.

Thanks to social media, we’ve definitely come a very long way from the notion of eating to survive. Nowadays, how pretty your food looks is JUST as important as how it tastes! Right? Right.

Here are my top 5 trends:

  1. Avo Smash

Avocado toast is the top-ranked trendy breakfast choice for all ages. Not only did its popularity shoot up by nearly 60 percent this year, but this new craze also popped up in more than 600,960 Instagram posts and 8 out of 10 breakfast spots have it on their menu.

Millennials aren’t the only diehard fans. Apparently, Gen X has caught on and is just as guilty of indulging. Also, in case you didn’t know, the trend started down under in Australia, and I couldn’t be prouder!!

  2. Avocado Burger Buns

Since the term ’Gluten Free’ gained popularity, the world has been in search of something to replace burger buns. Technically we could go for some mock bread bun, but the crumbly consistency gets old.

So when the first avocado burger bun hit social media, it’s no surprise it went viral. It looks pretty and can be loved by avocado obsessives and the healthy food cult. Win-win in my eyes, especially for those low-carb diets. It will change the way you eat a burger forever.

  3. Avocado Roses

Turns out for some people, smashed avocado on sourdough won’t cut it anymore. The new way to present your avocado to the world is in the form of a rose.

Yep, people are really turning the avocado they put on their toast into roses. 2019 is more than just food tasting good, it’s all about it looking good for the ‘gram.

Take a look at your favorite food bloggers’ feeds and you’re bound to come across a post dedicated to an avocado rose. It upgrades a simple meal of toast into, well, a very instagrammable moment.

Is there anything more delicious-looking than a perfectly shaped rose & made out of a gorgeously green, ripe avocado? I think not.

  4. Avocado Fries

An all-avocado diet has never Been Easier – the avocado cult is getting creative, and what’s better than combining two of the world’s best foods: avocados and fries. Crispy and crunchy on the outside and smooth and creamy on the inside, no wonder people are marveling over this savory sensation.

  5. Avocado Oil

Avocado oil has become one of the top-rated healthy oils around. Not only is it extremely versatile, but it is rich in flavor, healthy for the heart and becoming a main ingredient in salad dressings. (Get started on this trend by checking out Chanie Nayman’s Watermelon Matchstick Salad and Naomi Elberg’s Mexican Spiced Chicken Salad with Creamy Avocado Dressing.)

The beauty of avocado oil is its mild flavor in cooking, which helps recipes remain light on the stomach. It has slowly become the main ingredient in new items hitting the supermarket shelves like mayonnaise and potato chips.
